What is des stent?

Des stent is a type of stent used to treat blockages in coronary arteries. "DES" stands for Drug-Eluting Stent, meaning that these stents release medication over time to help prevent the artery from re-closing. The medication typically used in DES is an anti-proliferative drug that stops the growth of cells within the stent, reducing the chances of restenosis (re-narrowing of the artery). DES stents are made of a metal framework (typically stainless steel or cobalt-chromium) coated with a thin polymer layer containing the drug. The use of DES has significantly reduced the incidence of re-narrowing of the coronary artery after stenting, improving the long-term outcomes for patients with coronary artery disease.
